Im Rahmen dieser Master‘s Thesis wurden acht eiserne Spathae (zweischneidige Schwerter) aus dem merowingerzeitlichen Gräberfeld bei Kinding-Enkering, Lkr. Eichstätt, bearbeitet. Sie umfasst die Untersuchung und Bestimmung organischer Bestandteile, die aufgrund von Eisenkorrosion auf dem Metall konserviert wurden. Mit Hilfe einer digitalen Kartierung der organischen Reste wurden die Ergebnisse einheitlich dargestellt und der Aufbau der Schwertgriffe sowie der Schwertscheiden rekonstruiert. Die Röntgenanalyse ermöglichte eine differenzierte Darstellung der Klingendamaszierungen und erlaubte den Vergleich dieser. Außerdem wird auf die Herstellungstechniken der Tauschierungen eingegangen und eine Materialanalyse der Einlegearbeiten vorgenommen. Ziel der Untersuchungen war es anhand aller Analyseergebnisse die acht Schwerter auf Gemeinsamkeiten bzw. Unterschiede hin zu vergleichen und möglicherweise regionaltypische Merkmale herauszuarbeiten.     «

In the context of the current Master’s Thesis eight iron spathae (double-edged swords) are inspected, that were discovered in the Merovingian time cemetery of Kinding-Enkering, in the district of Eichstätt. Therefore the organic components conserved due to the corrosion of the iron objects, are investigated and identified. Via digital mapping the organic components were standard illustrated and both the structure of the hilt and the scabbard were reconstructed. On this basis the evaluation of the results occurred. The X-ray fotographing allowed a differentiated presentation of the damascene on the blade, that could compared among themselves. Furthermore, the production techniques of the damascening are shown and additionally, a material analysis of the inlays is performed. The goal of this study is to compare the eight swords in order to point out the similarities and differences between them and to carve out potential, regional specific attributes, by using the results from all the inspections.     «
