By combining methods of multidisciplinary design optimization with methods of precise modeling of membranes the potential of membrane structures for saving weight is enhanced. Using examples from aerospace, the interaction between membrane deformations and the system performance as well as the influence on the system mass is investigated. Furthermore, methods for the reduction of this influence are presented. Secondly, the influence of inaccurate material properties on membrane deformations is studied. Based on these studies, methods which are capable of determining precise material properties are introduced and implemented on a newly developed test bed. Moreover, these methods are verified on complex laboratory models using photogrammetric methods for surface and deformation measurements.
