Subject of the Master‘s Thesis is the examination of the Fourteen Holy Helpers Relief from Rožmberk nad Vltavou in possession of the Aleš South Bohemian Gallery. Little is known about the artwork. The artwork was transferred to the Chair of ‘Conservation, Restauration, Art Technology and Conservation Science’ of the Technical University of Munich, to get more information about the original function, use, iconography and their origin. Presumable the shrine and the relief initially do not belong together. The illegible lettering was identified to answer these questions, and compared with other medieval holy helper depictions. For attainments about the genesis and historical changes, the artwork was investigated by microscope and samples of the polychromy, wood, and textile were taken. The samples were analyzed by using polarized light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), additionally some samples were analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) to identify the use of pigments and filler media. Further art technical features are discussed in the thesis, such as the reverse side of painted altarpieces between 1450 and 1550 and incised stipes in the wooden surface. Finally a concept was developed to consolidate the reverse side of the painted altarpiece and to remove the coating material on the polychromy. The aim is to present the Fourteen Holy Helper Relief in the Aleš South Bohemian Gallery with its front and reverse visible of April 2016. To illustrate the originally winged altarpiece, a digital reconstruction should be presented aside.
