Patent Office in Munich is a 1992 established stone installation by Japanese artist CHIHIRO SHIMOTANI. It is a 19.09 x 5.10 m large rectangle consisting of large river pebbles, which is crossed by a diagonal of cut through river pebbles with black silk-screen printings on their intersections. Because of the artwork, which belongs to the tradition of the Japanese karesansui-drygarden, being exposed to the weather all year round, climate inflicted changes take place, which harm especially the printings. Therefore a documentation of the existing condition was necessary. Referential hand measuring, tachymetrical measurement and terrestrial laser scan were considered as possible measurement methods. Finally, a measurement with a tachymeter was performed. Using the measure points, photos of the stone installation could be rectified, thus being able to create an orthogonal overview. As name giving element of the artwork, the diagonal was additionally documented in form of a catalogue with pictures.
