In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird die Herstellung von Siliconen beginnend mit der Gewinnung des Elements Silicium bis zur industriellen Compoundierung der Siliconprodukte in Grundzügen dargestellt. In diesem Zusammenhang wird auf die Synthese der Ausgangstoffe Silane zu Methylpolysiloxanen eingegangen. Der Weg vom Monomer zum Polymer durch eine Polykondensation und Polymerisation zum Endprodukt Polysiloxan wird aufgezeigt. Neben diesem sich auf die grundlegenden Schritte beschränkenden Einblick in die Chemie der Polysiloxane, bildet die Erarbeitung der Literatur zur Alterung der Polysiloxane einen wichtigen Punkt in dieser Arbeit. Basierend auf Künstlerinterviews und eigenen Beobachtungen an Kunstwerken aus Silicon, ist der Verwendung dieses Werkstoffes in der zeitgenössischen Kunst ein zentraler Abschnitt gewidmet. Dabei wird die Vielfalt und der Gestaltungsreichtum, den Silicon als Werkstoff bieten kann, in Wort und Bild dokumentiert. Ableitend aus den Untersuchungen der Kunstwerke und der Auswertung der Gespräche mit Künstlern, Galeristen und Sammlern, konnte die Problematik im Umgang mit ‚Siliconkunst’ und ihrer Erhaltung und Pflege umrissen werden. Bezüglich einer Reinigung und Klebung von Siliconkunst wurden Versuche durchgeführt, deren Ergebnisse als Ansatzpunkte für weitere Studien und Forschungen zu verstehen sind.     «

The Thesis focuses on silicone in modern art. The author interviewed artists, gallery owners and conservators on their experiences with silicone and their handling of this material. On the basis of these interviews, supported by the author´s examination of selected works of art, the purpose of this paper is to identify the problems associated with art in silicone with respect to conservation and restoration, and to suggest approaches to solving conservation problems. The first part of this thesis deals with the basic chemistry of polysiloxanes of the element silicon (si) to the widely used product “silicone”. Based on a summary of the latest and most important literature about the degradation of polysiloxane, the aging process of silicone is discussed, as it pertains to works of art. The techniques and materials artists use when working with silicone is described and illustrated with photographs in a second part, publication intended in same periodical. Different ways of producing art with silicone are presented in a explorative study. With the compilation of research and information in this paper, the specific problems concerning the conservation of silicone became apparent. Tests were done in search of solutions for cleaning surfaces and gluing damaged parts. These tests on the purification and adhesion of silicone were conducted in order to establish basics for further research in these fields. Solutions need to be found for these important contemporary conservation problems.     «
