The art clock (about 1725) with chinoise decoration was presumably acquired for castle Schleißheim by elector Max Emanuel (1662-1726). Since 1858, it belongs to the collection of the Bavarian National Museum Munich. The clockwork was manufactured by Benediktus Fürstenfelder (1680-1754) from Friedberg near Augsburg. The clock case and table, originated in Augsburg or Munich, are characterized by their western form and the lacquer polychrome that imitates Asian lacquerware. Travel, legation reports and model engravings are referred to to discuss their function as models for the decoration. Manufacturing techniques and materials used for support, polychrome and metal applications as well as the description of the work process are clarified by means of art technological examination.
