Roman Wall Paintings are not only known for their durability but also for extremely smooth surfaces. Alledgedly some of them were so shiny that the spectator was reflected. Today this effect can hardly be seen. The impact of weathering, a large number of tourists every year and past restorations lead to modification and decay of the wall paintings. Nevertheless, a notable amount of these paintings remained nearly 2000 years under varying conditions. Which materials and techniques have been applied to cause such stability? The knowledge of ancient materials and techniques are indispensable for a successful restoration and conservation. Thus, practical reconstruction provides the base. The focus of the work presented has been Roman wall painting techniques related to the II. Roman style. It consists of a theoretical part and a practical one. First of all, to classify the investigated originals, the chronological history of Roman Wall Painting styles is described. Secondly, recent analysises referring to the physical parameters concerning Roman plaster have been evaluated.
