The decline of traditional building techniques and crafts in the 20th century in favor of industrial building production cannot sufficiently be described as a result of market competition. Significantly, rationalization of construction resulted from raised demands for the control, computability and predictability of building processes. Common construction work became apprehended anew, structured into basic elements and standardized.
On account of the development in Switzerland, this transformation has to be seen in regard to protective economic regulations and the influence of organized building associations on public procurement from the 1930s onward. Officialized and fostered through the associations, the methods of managerial-economics and ›scientific management‹ became implemented in small and medium sized construction businesses. Not the best offer but correct calculation was to define reasonable and adequate construction costs. Construction based solely on know-how and experience vanished gradually, as it could not fit the system of controlled, verifiable, and manageable prices.
