In the study the long-term stability of welded aluminum multi material connections in a vehicle wiring system was examined using the welding techniques ultrasonic, laser and resistance welding. Depending on the welding technique used and the plating material of the connecting component, growth of different intermetallic compounds may occur during the operational life of the connections. These compounds can have a negative influence on the electrical and mechanical long-term stability. If rather brittle intermetallics appear, the mechanical stability of the connections is insufficient. However, if rather ductile intermetallic compounds grow and they are not interconnected, the mechanical performance is unaffected. The electrical performance of the connections is not impaired by the intermetallic compounds.
