Fluorescence-based immunoassays have been developed for the novel inflammation marker Chitinase 3-like 1 (YKL-40) in human serum. At a 57.3 ng/mL cutoff, the parameter has a 100 % negative predictive value for the exclusion of pneumonia. The utilization of magnetic beads allows the detection of the marker in clinically relevant concentrations within 17 min using a portable device for fluorescence detection. This assay could be transferred on an automated Labdisk, and was successfully applied to serum samples.
