This thesis examines the concept of ecological resilience and its relation to sustainable development. The objectives are the following: (i) to describe the resilience approach, including its background theory and resilience mechanisms, (ii) to critizice the resilience approach as regards to conceptual structure, empirical validity and cultural assumptions, and (iii) to specify the practical relevance of the resilience approach for achieving sustainability objectives.

Die Dissertation untersucht das Konzept der ökologischen Resilienz und deren Verbindungen zu Nachhaltiger Entwicklung. Zielstellungen der Dissertation sind: (i) die Beschreibung des Resilienz-Ansatzes einschliesslich der Hintergrundtheorie und den Resilienz-Mechanismen, (ii) die empirische, begriffliche und theoretische Kritik des Ansatzes, sowie (iii) die Darstellung der praktischen Relevanz des Resilienz-Ansatzes für Zielstellungen Nachhaltiger Entwicklung.
