The pilot-ignited premixed natural gas lean-burn combustion process in a high-speed large-bore gas engine is investigated in this thesis. The main topic is the effect of the nozzle geometry and inlet valve timing on the combustion process. To study the combustion in detail, an optical engine with Bowditch piston and a conventional metal engine were used. Furthermore, to analyze the mixture preparation in the combustion chamber and the measurement results, the gas exchange and injection process were simulated using 3D-CFD simulations.
