In this work, a procedure for the thermal pre-dimensioning of lithium-ion battery systems for electric vehicles is proposed, considering all requirements, influencing factors and interactions relevant in the concept phase. The design process includes the selection, geometrical arrangement, and electrical connection of suitable battery cells to form a battery pack divided into modules as well as the design of the thermal management concept at battery and vehicle level. The concepts are validated by means of a coupled electrical and thermal simulation of their behavior in subsequent vehicle use.
