Metathesis of oleic acid and its derivatives is an interesting pathway for the synthesis of bifunctional compounds based on renewable resources. Second generation Ru-catalysts were utilized, since they have a good tolerance towards functional groups and impurities. Although technical grade educts were used, conversions with high yields and low catalyst loadings (0.001 – 0.01 mol-%) were achieved.
Cross metathesis offers a greater variability concerning chain length and functional groups of the monomer, but work-up is difficult. Homometathesis is providing C18-bifunctional compounds, which can be easily separated via distillation or crystallization.
In addition to catalytic conversion, research on the product isolation was done. For assorted products, higher scale separation methods have been conducted.
