For droplet deposition of materials such as solder or polymers, work temperatures of about 150-300°C are necessary. High operating temperatures impair the function of the piezo actuators used in conventional droplet generators. When the Curie temperature is reached, these actuators become completely inoperable.
A new droplet generator with electromagnetic actuator was developed, whose principle permits an employment up to approx. 1000°C. The system is presented and examined in simulations and experiments. Areas of application for high temperature droplet generators are the electronics manufacturing (fabrication of conductive paths or of solder bumps for flip-chip contacting) or the Rapid Manufacturing of plastic and metal parts.
