The present study deals with the “restoration of ecological continuity at the mouth of the Wolnzach.”. The initial situation in the study area proves to be extremely challenging due to the special situation of the Wolnzach at its mouth into the Ilm. The complexity is increased by the existing Hartleitner hydropower plant on the Wolnzach as well as the flood channel Lehenbach, including the diversion structure and a bottom sill. In this context, both technical and near natural fishways as well as measures to improve the unsatisfactory ecological condition of the Wolnzach are considered. The needs of different target fish species in terms of size, behavior and swimming ability are taken into account. The following analyses show that the preferred option for re- storing ecological continuity at the mouth of the Wolnzach is the creation of a bypass channel typical for the river at the dam via the flood channel into the Ilm. This thesis aims to provide a sound basis for the planning and implementation of measures to restore ecological continuity at the Wolnzach estuary, taking into consideration the diverse challenges and requirements of the site.
