The purpose of both the digital twin and the BIM-5D model is to visually represent the entire life cycle of a physical object. Thus, properties such as different design and product variants can be simulated, analyzed and optimized before money and time are invested in creating the real object.
The aim of this work is to investigate the BIM-5D model and the digital twin using a comparative analysis and identifying system structures in the digital twin that can be integrated to optimize the structure and benefits of the BIM model.
Technical factors as well as IT-challenges of the two models and their handling will be discussed and compared. Furthermore, the BIM and Digital Twin based approaches were put in contrast and compared based on their life cycles.
The systematic comparative analysis has shown that the two models differ in their basic structure and function despite the fact that they have the same role as a core working platform. The BIM-5D-Model is a static Big Open-Model, while the Digital Twin is a dynamic Little Closed-Model.
However, the many advantages of the DT demonstrate that adapting the collaboration structures of a BIM-based design to a Little Closed BIM model is worth considering
