This dissertation presents a study on some interconnected aspects of wind farm operation. Key performance indicators are identified to comprehensively describe wind farm O&M. These indicators highlight the crucial importance of plant aerodynamics –and in particular of wakes– in the physics and economics of wind plants. Wind farm aerodynamics is studied by scaled wind tunnel models, which are used for characterizing wakes in flat and complex terrains. Finally, wind farm control, and in particular wake steering, is investigated as a means to optimize power capture.
