Numerous studies have shown that the Mediterranean diet can protect against diet-related diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases and various cancer entities, including breast cancer. However, the underlying mechanisms are largely unclear. So far, mainly the role of anti-inflammatory fatty acids has been discussed. In the present review, using the example of genetically determined and sporadic breast cancer, the question will be addressed, what role the gut microbiome plays, since it's composition and function is modulated by the Mediterranean diet.
