The German word “Inkarnat” is widely used in art history, cultural studies and fine art conservation. To draw a distinction to synonyms like flesh or skin colour, “Inkarnat” is suggested as the name for an artistic portrayal of the human skin in its entirety. Not only is skin important as a subject for art historians, but also in regards to its biological and cultural significance. Its perception in different times and cultures is a defining factor for the transfer of the human body into visual media. Historic manuscripts and examples show, that the depiction of naked skin has always been an artistically elevated topic. Criteria for the quality of “Inkarnat” are, aside from naturalism, the display of light and shadow as well as anatomic details.
