Proton-density fat fraction (PDFF) of the paraspinal muscles, derived from chemical shift encoding-based water-fat magnetic resonance imaging, has emerged as an important surrogate biomarker in individuals with intervertebral disc disease, osteoporosis, sarcopenia and neuromuscular disorders.
