Cereals such as wheat are among our most important crops but their genome sequences and gene repertoires remained largely uncharacterized so far, due to large genome sizes, high repeat content and complex genome structures. In this work, novel analysis strategies were developed to access and characterize the gene content of wheat and barley and construct gene families across closely related model and crop plants. This both allowed new insights into the evolution and biology of complex cereal genomes and provides a valuable resource to study and identify genes and gene families in cereals.
