In this thesis, we address the two-dimensional material system graphene. Firstly, we focus on the synthesis of polycrystalline graphene. In a second step, we deal with the basic functionalization of graphene with oxygen and hydrogen, investigating the type, density and spatial distribution of the introduced functional groups as well as their influence on charge transport in graphene. Finally, we introduce polymer brushes on graphene as a non-invasive functionalization route towards multifunctional graphene-based sensing.
