In this study, the ascomycete
Neurospora crassa was used to examine fungal plant cell wall perception and the regulation of its degradation. An analysis of large scale RNA-Seq data indicated that additional factors besides chemical composition are affecting carbon source perception. Moreover, novel regulatory elements that modulate pectin degradation were discovered through molecular biology approaches, expanding this regulatory network by three transcription factors, one transport protein and one F-box protein.
