The unicellular green alga Phacotus lenticularis (P.l.) is the only calcifying species of phytoplankton in freshwater and is abundant in temperate hard-water lakes worldwide. Die einzellige Grünalge Phacotus lenticularis (P.l.) ist weltweit die einzige kalzifizierende Phytoplanktonart in Hartwasserseen der gemäßigten Breitenzone. Sie bildet eine zweiteilige Kalzitschale und trägt nennenswert zur biogen induzierten Karbonatfällung und somit zur langfristigen Kohlenstoffbindung in Seen bei.
