The conceptional aspects of a statewide geographical information system for the forestry (FORST-GIS) in Bavaria are represented in this thesis. At first a technical rough concept is shown which is based on a taxonomy and a definition of GIS. The system architecture is derived from this rough concept. The design of the geographical database forms the core of the thesis. This design had to be developed especially for a GIS with area objects in the context of user questions in forestry and for its statewide application. The data model is shown from a conceptional and logical view and its realization is described with concrete database products. Special focus is put on the meaning of the spatial reference, on the geocoding, and on the coordinate transformation. An overview of the realization of applications, considerations of quality assurance of spatial data and of profitability, as well as an outlook on new developments complete the representation of the system concept.
