By analyzing the braiding process chain it was found out that a yarn gap propagates along the braiding process chain from its original cause to its final stage in the braided preform. Due to enlarged yarn damage a fibrous ring is formed on a braiding spool. It leads to an increase of yarn tension during the braiding process and therefore to a yarn gap in the braided preform. Depending on the impregnation process the yarn gap may influence the local undulation of the braided composite negatively which induces a reduction of mechanical performance.
