In this paper the electrochemical background of iontophoresis is described.
It is assumed that the drug introduced into the body by iontophoresis
is first stored in the skin, later penetrating into deeper tissue
layers. The depth of penetration is primarily independent of current
desity; rather, it depends on the magnitude of the drug depot in
the skin, on diffusion coefficients and on the resorption properties
of the subcutaneous tissues. It is shown, that, in addition to the
current-time-product, the magnitude of the current is an important
parameter for iontophoresis.
