It is still an open question as to how direction-selective neuronal response arises in primary visual cortex. We have investigated a recurrent network model with spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) and an asymmetric learning window. We show through computer simulations that direction-selective cells arise through STDP with either highly correlated, stimulus-driven, activity or through purely cortex-intrinsic spontaneous activity. Even in the latter case, direction-preference maps as found experimentally can be reproduced.
