This thesis focuses on onboard train localization and a mapping of railway tracks. Onboard train localization uses train mounted sensors and a track map. The research comprises an analysis of the train mounted sensors GNSS, IMU, and magnetometer for the track feature measurements. Three train localization methods are presented, implemented and evaluated: a simple map-match method, a probabilistic particle filter method and a probabilistic multiple hypothesis tracker method. Finally, a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) approach is developed and analyzed for the required track map.
