Within the scope of this PhD thesis, a novel deep-bed filtration technique for the removal of manganese from drinking water with catalytically active glass collector beads has been developed successfully. Following a multi-stage process development, the filtration process was tested under practical conditions, resulting in unimpeded and efficient manganese removal. Compared to manganese removal by conventional filtration, the newly designed deep-bed filtration represents a promising technical and economical alternative.
