Considering the lack of progress in reducing the environmental impact of the building sector, more and more sufficiency measures are being discussed. However, criteria and indicators for assessing sufficiency are lacking, as are estimates of the potential for reducing environmental impacts.
In this thesis, a literature review with special consideration of existing sustainable building certification systems will derive an assessment matrix for the sufficiency of residential buildings. By means of a set of qualitative and quantitative indicators, a fundamental statement about the sufficiency of residential buildings is made and concrete optimization measures are identified.
With evaluating existing studies, the potential for reducing invironmental impacts through sufficiency is described and partially quantified. It shows that sufficiency measures can generate relevant greenhouse gas emission savings. However, full consideration of sufficiency aspects requires adjustments to the life cycle assessment methodology and other holistic approaches.
