Biogenic sulfuric acid (BSA) corrosion, usually affects sewage systems, but typical BSA damage patterns were also observed in sludge digesters. Thus, the aim was to verify BSA corrosion in six digesters by (i) detecting the relevant sulfate reducing and sulfur oxidizing bacteria (SRB and SOB), and (ii) analyzing the BSA corrosion potential. In this work, both SRB and SOB involved in concrete corrosion were identified. Their ability to produce BSA and the huge corrosion potential of A. thiooxidans on hardened cement paste and concrete revealed BSA corrosion potential in digesters.
