This thesis contributes to the field of engineering change management in three aspects. First, the understanding of both engineering changes and engineering change management is enhanced by integrating psychological theories of human error as well as the consideration of engineering change drivers. Second, an empirical study is conducted to identify the current need for support within industry as well as to characterize critical changes Third, a method for analyzing critical engineering changes and defining respective measures is proposed, which addresses today’s most relevant fields of action within engineering change management: to prevent changes, to identify changes early and prepone them, and to continuously learn from changes.
