The paper presents an empirically-grounded method for the representation and analysis of interactions in commonhold-type housing estates for discussion. The method draws on formalised communications, produced as minutes of annual meetings held by the collective of residents, and other sources of information, such as evidence found in the built environment. The data is assembled in a timeline diagram which acts as an explorative, as well as a representational and analytical device. It supports different readings – multi-scalar, relational, sequential – making the contingent nature of the process and its various framings visible; the diagram situates interactions and the decision-making process in a field that is itself the product of changes over time. It is suggested that this focus of research could broaden our understanding of transformative processes in housing estates, as well as our more general concepts of adaptability, participation and urban change.
