Companies in the German capital goods industry are unable to protect valuable knowledge in products, documents, and the heads of employees in adequate ways. This weakness manifests in imitations of their products. Extensive involvement in value networks causes knowledge transfer situations that are difficult to control. Through the study of such situations this thesis provides first descriptions of their elements und thereby adds an explanatory model of knowledge transfer and protection in value networks to the state of research. Developers in companies benefit from these insights in the form of guidelines compiled during this project. The guidelines provide a comprehensive view of transfer and protection of technology knowledge, making an implementation of the strategies of knowledge protection proposed in the thesis possible.
