Throughout the last decade, a large number of electronic driver-assistance systems have been developed in order to improve vehicles' comfort and safety. These more or less all rely on odometric data. However, in the future, new forms of information are likely to be used. Visual sensors, e.g. cameras, can provide additional information on traffic and the vicinity. If those cameras have a high focal length, to give a detailed view of objects that are far away, active stabilization is needed to prevent blurring. The inertial stabilization is based on a custom-designed and patented sensor system that uses MEMS components in connection with a biomimetic control algorithm for adaptive enhancement and online calibration of the gaze stabilization system. Using models from neuroscience, the system cost can be significantly reduced. In addition to its automotive application, the camera platform is applied to pilot assistance during final approach.
