The Compensatory Model proposes that flow emerges when implicit motives are aroused, no competing explicit motives are activated, and the perceived abilities are sufficient. Results of 3 studies revealed that implicit motives promote flow mediated by affective preferences. Further, the interaction of high affective preferences, cognitive preferences, and perceived abilities fostered high levels of flow. Moreover, flow can also be achieved when implicit and explicit power motives are congruent.

Das Kompensationsmodell sagt bei angeregten impliziten Motiven, fehlenden konkurrierenden expliziten Motiven und ausreichenden Fähigkeiten Flow vorher. Die Ergebnisse von 3 Studien zeigen, dass affektive Präferenzen den Zusammenhang zwischen impliziten Motiven und Flow mediieren. Die Interaktion von hohen affektiven Präferenzen, kognitiven Präferenzen und Fähigkeiten führt zu hohem Flow. Außerdem wird Flow auch bei einer Motivkongruenz zwischen implizitem und explizitem Machtmotiv berichtet.
