The present paper is concerned with a numerical simulation procedure for fluid-structure interaction problems occurring in civil engineering. The structural simulation performed by the finite element method is coupled with a finite volume flow solver via a partitioned solution approach. Special emphasis is put on the appropriate discretization in the structural simulations applying classical p-version FEM and advanced p -elements. Results for a practically relevant application of a mobile tent roof representing lightweight membrane structures are discussed and compared with corresponding experimental measurements carried out in a wind tunnel of a cooperation partner. For a footbridge, the advantages of discretization with three-dimensional p -elements are pointed out.
