Absorption chillers using the working pair water/LiBr are in demand for residential cooling since
they allow for a primary energy saving. Currently, small chillers driven by low temperature
heat with cooling capacity up to 20 kW are developed. The aim is to reduce the dimensions of
these appliances. For this purpose, the potential of a flooded generator is presented. The heat
transfer during desorption of the refrigerant water from the boiling aqueous lithium bromide
solution under subatmospheric pressure has been investigated experimentally. The impact of
the bundle geometry and of the liquid column above the boiling tubes has been analysed for
a plain and a finned tube bundle heat exchanger. As a result, the potential of the flooded generator
concept for application in compact absorption units is confirmed. The gained detailed
information about the boiling process is useful for the optimization of flooded generator heat
exchangers.
