The dose dependent and saturable incorporation of dietary eicosapentaenoic (EPA); docosahexaenoic (DHA) and alpha-linolenic (ALA) acid into erythrocytes was demonstrated in two human intervention trials and in an animal study on rats. EPA and DHA were preferentially incorporated, where DHA was partially reconverted to EPA. In addition, results provided evidence for the elongation of ALA to EPA and DHA. Cell culture experiments with 13C-labled ALA on human hepatoma cells revealed quantitative data on its elongation to EPA and DHA, which strongly depended on the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids. In addition, ALA conversion into EPA and DHA was correlated to the gene expression of proteins associated with lipid metabolism.
