The increasing threat of counterfeits of technical products is a serious challenge for manufacturers. As a countermeasure, an holistic, systematic approach to develop a protection system is necessary. Two main points have to be considered: the protection of the product itself and the protection of organisational knowledge not included directly as part of the product.
Based on a theoretical and empirical analysis, a systematic approach for developing a protection system is established. The approach enables companies to conduct a product- and company specific analysis of counterfeit threats and the selection of appropriate countermeasures as well as the design of an effective protection system. Specific technical design directives and recommendations for counterfeit-safe product design are derived from product attributes.
Recommendations for the protection of non-product know-how require organisational counter measures, which are derived from company characteristics.
