The guideline-compliant time till initiation of antibiotic therapy in septic patients can usually not be achieved despite multiple interventions. In a retrospective single-center cohort study, the time interval between the onset of severe sepsis and the administration of antibiotic was investigated. Forty-six potential factors for delayed therapy were identified and their frequencies were reported. For each of these, their association with prolonged therapy times as well as increased mortality was subsequently investigated.
