The INIT II-breath gas study investigated the effects of intranasal insulin application per proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS) on exhaled metabolites of children in placebo-controlled trials. No uniform difference could be found in the profiles of exhaled metabolites between the insulin group and placebo controls. Some insulin group subjects showed, however, increased fluctuations in acetone and isoprene, which may have been the result of metabolic effects of intranasal insulin application.
