The skin constitutes the boundary to our environment and plays an important role in immune defense. Skin disorders impair functionality but precise diagnosis of disease is difficult with the current optical imaging techniques, which are limited in imaging depth and contrast. This work is dedicated to the development and applications of multispectral optoacoustic dermoscopy (MOD), which provides improved imaging depth and rich contrast. Technical detail on data processing and image reconstruction is presented. MOD offers a wide range of applications, visualizing melanoma tumor growth, angiogenesis, and blood-oxygenation of single vessels. Furthermore, the first account on clinical optoacoustic imaging of disease biomarkers is shown.
