Tranexamic acid (TXA), a widely used antifibrinolytic agent, can cause seizures. The neuropharmacologic correlate of these adverse drug reactions has not been clarified. Therefore, in this dissertation, the effect of TXA on the synaptic transmission was investigated in acute murine brain slices using patch-clamp technique and Voltage Sensitive Dye Imaging. TXA reduced the inhibitory GABAA receptor-mediated synaptic transmission via postsynaptic mechanisms. This action might explain the proconvulsive properties of TXA.
