Perimandibular abscesses require drainage and removal of the underlying cause of infection. The current established treatment comprises extraoral incision and drainage under general anaesthesia and can be associated with delay to treatment, which might result in life-threatening complications. Between January 2008 and July 2013, 205 patients were either treated by immediate intraoral incision under local anaesthesia or extraoral treatment under general anaesthesia and prospectively evaluated. The early treatment combined with administration of Amoxicillin and Clavulanacid showed promising results affecting the course of healing.
