In oral surgery, operative interventions of the lateral lower jaw may injure sensory nerves. In this study, the incidence of such lesions among 1559 cases who were treated in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the Technische Universität München between 2000 to 2009 was retrospectively analyzed.
Data were extracted from the patients’ files and, whereever possible, by a follow-up examination. There was sensory nerve damage in 2,69% of all cases. Women were affected more often than men and the predominant group of age was from 50 to 59 years. A permanent nerve lesion was recorded in only 5 cases. From these results it was concluded that nerve injury is a rather seldom complication in oral surgery.
