End-of-life care and dealing with death are often perceived as burdensome aspects of a physician's responsibilities. The present study, using a qualitative research approach, provides insight into the emotional, cognitive, and physical experiences as well as coping mechanisms of medical students and resident physicians in relation to encounters with dying and death. Furthermore, the study sheds light on the impacts of such experiences on their behavior and attitudes, particularly with regard to their understanding of their role as physicians.
