Smartphones have become popular mainly because of the large variety of applications they can run. More limited platforms connected to phones, like wearable sensors and smart appliances, are much less flexible. This thesis presents techniques that permit smart devices to offload part of their workload on smartphones to increase their versatility and efficiency. Using this approach, an adaptive compression algorithm for wearable sensors and a reconfigurable scheme for smart devices were developed and evaluated.
